A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital tool used for signing electronic documents and safeguarding data. It is widely trusted by government departments and various service sectors for its reliability in authenticating and securing online transactions. DSC provides multi-layered security for sensitive information shared digitally.
As per the Information Technology Act, 2000, it is mandatory to use Digital Signature Certificates for filing income tax returns, submitting registration forms, and participating in e-procurement processes. This ensures the authenticity of the information and verifies the identity of the signer, confirming that the data has not been altered.
Digital Signature Certificates comply with the globally accepted X.509 Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) standards. These certificates help protect against cyber threats, data breaches, and forgery. They are issued in accordance with IVG and IOG guidelines, as prescribed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA).
Certifying Authorities (CAs) offer a variety of DSC types for both individuals and organizations through different application methods. Applicants can choose the appropriate type of DSC based on their specific requirements. The various types of Digital Signature Certificates are briefly explained below.
Through a Certifying Authority (CA), Class 3 Digital Signature Certificates can be obtained with a validity of 1, 2, or 3 years. This validity is governed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), Government of India. As per regulatory guidelines, DSCs cannot be issued for a period of less than 1 year or more than 3 years.
Identity Services provides Class 3 Digital Signature Certificates in compliance with IVG guidelines, making them among the most secure and reliable digital certificates available. These certificates are issued within highly secure environments where data protection and confidentiality are of utmost importance.
Class 3 DSCs are extensively used for applications such as tender submissions, electronic signing, online trading, and other critical digital processes. These use cases often involve high-value transactions and sensitive personal information, requiring robust security measures that DSCs effectively provide.
